The Devil
Major Arcana • Card 15

Keywords: Shadow self, Attachment, Addiction, Restriction, Sexuality
⬆️ The Devil Upright
The Devil represents shadow self, attachment, addiction, restriction, and sexuality. The figures are chained, but the chains are loose—they could leave if they chose to.
When The Devil appears, examine what's holding you captive. Addictions, unhealthy relationships, negative thought patterns, or material obsessions may be controlling you. The first step to freedom is recognizing the chains.
This card can also represent healthy exploration of taboo or shadow aspects of yourself. Not all darkness is harmful.
⬇️ The Devil Reversed
When reversed, The Devil indicates releasing limiting beliefs, detachment, breaking free, or exploring dark thoughts. You might be freeing yourself from addiction or unhealthy patterns.
This reversal can also suggest that you're about to face your shadow side, or that hidden aspects of yourself are emerging.
